February Workshops 2017

Friends of Vocamus Press is collaborating with the Guelph Public Library to offer our free February Workshops series again in 2017. We’ve lined up some of the Guelph area’s most interesting writers to share their expertise, and we’d love to have you come join us at the Guelph Public Library’s Main Location on Sundays in February, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

February 05 – Donna McCaw on Storytelling
Storytelling informs writers about engaging characters, pace, symbolism, audience reaction, and essential elements of stories. Come take a look at writing through a different lens with Elora storyteller and poet, Donna McCaw.

February 12 – Garth Laidlaw on Writing Graphic Novels
Author and illustrator Garth Laidlaw will share some of the various approaches you can take to begin writing your own graphic novel, such a building a believable world, creating believable dialogue, keeping it entertaining while still carrying a thoughtful message (these don’t have to be at odds with each other!), and creating a story that is culturally relevant.

February 19 – John Nyman on Writing Poetry
Poet John Nyman will introduce a variety of approaches to poetic writing including lyricism, formalism, political poetry, and experimental techniques. Participants will be invited to try writing exercises related to their preferred approach, and to discuss the question: why write poetry?

February 26 – Nickolas Ruddock on Finding Inspiration
Ever struggle to find inspiration? Award winning novelist and poet Nickolas Ruddock will look at how to stimulate the writer’s imagination – no drugs, no alcohol, no divine intervention, just some solid tips and ideas to get your creativity flowing.
